Diaphragm Press

To manufacture diaphragms with consistent burst behaviour for the shock tube, a diaphragm press was designed and built to stamp aluminum diaphragm blanks. Based on previous testing, the press tool shape was chosen, however inconsistent scoring depth caused the diaphragm to rupture unevenly. Incorporation of hardened ground guide rods running in bronze bushings and a load cell to measure pressing force resulted in the production of diaphragm with consistent burst pressures. Once loaded with a diaphragm blank, a hydraulic press was used to achieve a pre-determined pressing force. A separate drilling jig was created to ensure proper alignments using guide pins in both the stamping press and the shock tube diaphragm holder.
